Dreams Die Hard, A Profile Piece on Cory Brim

Dreams Die Hard

“I lost my marriage, homes, cars and money…I had NOTHING” he exclaimed.  His tone is strong and assertive even when explaining his darkest days. This man’s story began in a tangled heap of despair yet he chose to fight through the weariness and pain that many people fall victim to.  When someone hits rock bottom, the only place they have left to go is back up and that’s exactly what he did.

Cory Brim founded and operates Sugar Rim Bar, the leading Mobile Event Company in Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia. He started the company four years ago at the age of 35 and literally began his business with one bottle opener and a single wine key.

What makes Cory Brim worth writing about? What makes his story worth reading? Like any good novel or movie, his life depicts the stubborn pattern of struggle and glory that we all experience. Some of us come out to tell our side of the story, as he did, whereas others are stuck within the thick threads of their own pattern. Mary Kay, founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics, also emphasizes this key to success:  “When you reach an obstacle, turn it into an opportunity. You have the choice. You can overcome and be a winner, or you can allow it to overcome you and be a loser. The choice is yours and yours alone. Refuse to throw in the towel. Go that extra mile that failures refuse to travel. It is far better to be exhausted from success than to be rested from failure.” (Kay 1).

“I’m living my dream,” he said to me, pushing through his 24th hour of being awake, managing business during the day and developing creative business ideas by night. Mentally he prepares himself by remaining hopeful and physically he is committed to staying healthy and fit; the time he dedicates to the gym and the time to reflect and express his gratitude to God go hand in hand with the hours he spends building his business – this balance is what keeps Cory moving in a positive direction. “People have NO IDEA how strong they really are! They don’t push themselves to the breaking point only to find out WE BEND, WE DON’T BREAK!…Every day I wake up is a chance for me to become who I’ve dreamed to be, the only thing that will stop me is DEATH and even he will have a hard time catching up to me!”

With Brim’s entrepreneurial mind and ambitious drive he has been a key player among small businesses in the Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia area commonly known as the DMV or the Tri-State. According to a recent census report, the DMV is a relatively small area with a total population around 3,000,000, whereas California has around 40,000,000 people. The Washington D.C. atmosphere is all hustle and bustle where entrepreneurs fight every day to stay afloat; because of this, business never sleeps and neither does Brim. He currently employs 200 people and books over 10 events a week. Cory is determined to take his business to the top.

Cory is business savvy, he is innovative and believes in providing exceptional customer service, hence his company’s mission statement “Be a Guest at Your Own Party.” This is why Sugar Rim Bar has booked celebrities such as R&B singers Raheem Devaughn and Miguel along with other high end clientele like the Washington Redskins. Sugar Rim Bar has also worked multiple charity events including New Hope Housing (Digital file image). As Cory prepares for his fifth year in business, he plans to organize larger events, raise more money for charities and continue to expand his business so he can offer more jobs to people in the community.

As I was listening to his story and reading testimonials on www.SugarRimBar.com I could sense the confidence behind this man’s plan and feel the power woven into the threads of his pattern. Cory believes whether in business or life you learn the best lessons by making mistakes and you grow during times of defeat and distress, but it is imperative to embrace difficult situations and use them as tools to better yourself, personally and professionally. In addition to creating jobs he is building a business that brings joy into the lives of everyday people and celebrities. His passion to work for the happiness of others has in turn brought him to a good place in his own life, where he continues to mend a painful past, maintains a balanced center in the present and ambitiously unfolds a successful future.

I am inspired by Cory’s story and his determination to create the best life possible for himself and others. Every day he wakes up and faces life as if it was a gift and he is right, it is a gift and what we chose to do with our days impacts our own pattern as well as others. Whether you are in the hospitality industry or any other field, whether you are working through personal problems or professional dilemmas, the only thing that matters is your determination and how hard you are willing to fight to see your dream come to life. When I asked Cory what his ultimate dream is, he said, “The ultimate dream would be to run this [business] from the beach and my phone!” Considering he is only four years into the business and has streamlined his way to the top, it won’t be long before we see Washington D.C.’s hardest working entrepreneur on the beaches of California organizing events for the stars in Hollywood, working hard and enjoying the fruits of his labor.

Testimonials:

50th Wedding Anniversary!: “Cory was amazing! This was a 50th wedding anniversary party that had around 100 guests of all age ranges. He has such a terrific personality – and it went way beyond bartending. He engaged in conversation with the guests, led a few dances, and really created a friendly and fun atmosphere. Numerous people over the course of the evening asked me how long I had known Cory since he just fit right in with the guests! If I ever host any kind of event like this in the future – this will be the first call I make! -Joy” (Joy 1)

Jill’s “Dirty 30” Birthday Party: “You are the man!  I had a great time last night, and so did everyone else.  Jill has a tendency to breakdown crying at the end of any big night of drinking, so thanks for holding back her tears – she had a great time! I would highly recommend you to any of my friends or colleagues anytime. – Jon T” (Jon 1)

WWF Conservation Holiday Party: “Hi Cory,   It was a pleasure to meet you yesterday. I just wanted to touch base and let you know that the party was great, and that was largely in part due to your wonderful staff.  They were friendly, professional and they even helped me clean up after they shut the bars down.   I will definitely call you for future events. And, I’ll be passing your cards out to everyone I know and writing glowing reviews all over the internet.   Have a great weekend and a lovely holiday! Best regards, Brienne.” (Brienne 1)Image
